Landsvirkjun Linuhönnun AFL

Settled in 1965, Landsvirkjun is the National Electric Company.

Landsvirkjun was established on the basis of plans to step up harnessing of hydro power through development of power-intensive industries as well as meeting rapidly growing demand from the ordinary market. Initially owned jointly by the City of Reykjavík and Icelandic State, its task was to supply electricity to south and west Iceland. A new law was enacted in 1983, entrusting it with the task of supplying electricity to the whole of Iceland. In the same year the Town of Akureyri, the largest town in north Iceland, acquired a share in the company. Its present ownership is divided among the Icelandic state (50%), Reykjavik (45%) and Akureyri (5%).

Landsvirkjun produces, distributes and sells wholesale electricity to local public utilities and, under special agreements, to power-intensive industries. Its task is to promote greater utilization of Iceland‘s energy resources and ensure that electricity supply is always sufficient to meet demand.

Landsvirkjun now produces 93% of all Iceland‘s electricity. It is financially independent and has been able to finance development of the power system with its own cash generation and borrowing.

Landsvirkjun is the contracting authority for the Karahnjukar hydropower project which will supply 630 MW to the future ALCOA aluminium plant. The dam will be the largest CFRD built in Europe.

Linuhönnun is an Icelandic-based company of consulting engineers, established in 1979 to provide the planning and design of high-voltage transmission lines.

This area of work continues to be a cornerstone of their operations, including design, computer program creation, and services in other European and African countries. More than 3000 kilometres of lines and hundreds of structures in steel, wood and concrete have been designed.

In 1982, in response to an obvious need, Linuhönnun established a maintenance consultancy service, and has provided consultancy on the upkeep, repair and preservation of numerous well-known Icelandic buildings, including the University of Iceland, the National Museum, the National Cultural Centre, the Reykjavík Cathedral and the official residence of the President of Iceland. The Company also provides guidance on cladding, windows, and production certification. Linuhönnun has been involved in the design of numerous buildings and complexes, including sizable construction projects such as the extensive and ultra-modern Smáralind shopping centre, the University of Iceland's Natural History Building, The Supreme High Court of Iceland Building, the Reykjavík Power Company headquarters, as well as a large number of extensions and refurbishments to smaller buildings.

The years of growth following 1985 have necessitated new departments within Linuhönnun, including the Geotechnical Department, Environmental and Safety Department, Traffic Department and Fire Safety Department. Another important area of operations is project management, involving the supervision of design and construction from inspection to completion, as well as urban techniques and surveying.

Linuhönnun broadened its area of operations in 1990, investing in a number of companies, both in Iceland and abroad.

Linuhönnun is, for instance, a shareholder in companies such as ICEconsult and Umsýn in Iceland, as well as HECLA in Paris.

Linuhönnun is also partner of HECLA to provide services with the major Transmission System Operators such as the French TSO RTE within the frame of technical studies of the high and very high voltage transmission lines.

Settled in 1987, AFL is an Icelandic-based company of consulting engineers, expert in electrical engineering, mainly in the transmission line field but also in the automation process of industrial plants such as the geothermal 90 MW powerstation of Nesjavellir.

AFL plans power projects and, for decades, performs the long-term electric consumption forecasts for the Icelandic authorities.

AFL is often a partner of Linuhönnun and HECLA in transmission lines projects abroad such as in Poland and France.
